Why Exchange Exports Alone Are Not a Bitcoin Tax Strategy

A strategy has a method, a complete data set, and an output that can be defended. An exchange export is a data fragment.

Exports omit other venues. They mishandle withdrawals. They rarely carry multi-year basis after self-custody. They do not produce a coordinated Form 8949 across your whole life in Bitcoin.

Using exports as a strategy is how people file five partial stories and call it a return. It is also how they miss losses and overstate gains.

A strategy for a large trader is: full import, transfer matching, basis reconstruction, classification, reconciliation to any 1099s, then forms.

CoinLedger is useful only if you use it that way. Downloading one venue’s CSV into any tool is not a CoinLedger strategy either. Completeness is the strategy. The product is a way to execute it.
